Eastern Eparchy Lenten Family Spiritual Retreat

The annual Eastern Eparchy Lenten Family Spiritual Retreat was held on Saturday, March 3rd, at St. Anne’s Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Scarborough, Ontario.

Approximately 45 children, youth, and adults attended. In addition to CYMKivtsi and parish youth from St. Demetrius Sobor in Etobicoke and St. John’s Church in Oshawa, families from St. Sophia Church in Waterloo and St. Anne’s participated as well.

The program consisted of three parts. Yuri Hladio offered a presentation entitled ““Snapchat, Instagram, and God” in which he addressed issues of identity by contrasting social media as a means of creating an identity and the true identity which is only discovered in Christ.

Fr. Bohdan Hladio, in “The Liturgy before the Liturgy,” demonstrated and explained the meaning of the Prokomedia, which is performed by the priest in the Altar prior to the public portion of the Liturgy, and in which the gifts of bread and wine are prepared for the Eucharist.

During these sessions the parents had a chance to gather by themselves and talk with Fr. Volodymyr Feskiv about spiritual issues and challenges specific to their important role in the family and Church.

During the final session, “Ask the Priest,” Frs. Volodymyr, Bohdan, and Myroslav Shmyhelskyy answered interesting and engaging questions from the participants about our faith, liturgy, and church practices.

The retreat culminated in Great Vespers, which was served by Fr. Volodymyr and sung beautifully by the choristers present, both young and old.

On behalf of all the participants we wish to extend special thanks to St. Anne’s parish for hosting the retreat and to the women who prepared and offered the snacks and treats (especially for the very delicious borscht which everyone enjoyed!).

All the participants, both young and old, derived great benefit from the spiritual teachings as well as the Christian fellowship they enjoyed.

—Fr. Bohdan Hladio

June 11, 2017 — Sunday of All Saints — Chapel of All Saints of Ukraine; Eastern Eparchy Family Celebration

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ —

Heartfelt thanks to His Grace, Bishop Andriy, our reverend Clergy, organizers, donors, altar servers, choristers, cantors, readers, volunteers, faithful parishioners, and above all — youth — who participated in the Youth Retreat and Great Vespers (on Friday & Saturday), and the Divine Liturgy and common meal at this year’s Eparchy Family Celebration.

Many thanks to the parish of St. Vladimir Cathedral in Hamilton, its Dean, Rt. Rev. Wasyl Makarenko for use of the parish’s Golden Gate Park in Grimsby on Friday and Saturday; to the parish of St. George and Rev. Fr. Mykhailo Pograniczny for hosting Youth Retreat participants at the celebration of Great Vespers on Saturday.

Many thanks to the parish of St. Volodymyr Cathedral, its Dean, Rt. Rev. Bohdan Sencio; the staff at St. Volodymyr Cultural Centre; the Chapel of All Saints of Ukrainian Lands and Rev. Fr. Dr. Jaroslaw Buciora, the members of the Order of Saint Andrew; to Very Rev. Fr. Bohdan Hladio; to Christina Kowalenko and Yuri Hladio; and first and foremost – undying admiration and eternal gratitude to the Youth Retreat and Eparchy Celebration’s principal organizer — Natalie Olynyk-Kowalenko.

A final word of thanks to James Cardinal and Cardinal Funeral Home for their very generous donation which made it possible for all attendees to eat in comfort, at tables and chairs beneath the breezy shade of wonderfully wide, brilliantly white tents.

Dear clergy, parishioners, and parents,

If you consider yourself dedicated to our church, if you feel the future strength of our church rests with our youth, you believe in the power of unity, or you have never attended the convention before, then this is the event for you! If you, as a parishioner or a parent, are looking for ideas and suggestions about how to start, run or improve a youth program, then this convention is for you!

“Why is attendance at the National CYMK Convention beneficial?”

The CYMK-UOY National Executive has worked diligently to put together practical, relevant and engaging sessions that will walk youth and adults through the steps required to start, run, or improve a youth program. The action-packed five-day program consists of youth organizational techniques, financial management skills, promotion and advertising skills, conflict resolution skills, a mini-faith program, and an all-inclusive choir to sing the Divine Liturgy. This event is also an opportunity to form new relationships, share ideas and common interests. Joining efforts at conventions helps on many levels to work towards a greater cause.

This is the opportunity to bring TOGETHER our community, and show our children what it means to be UNITED.

“Who is CYMK-UOY?”

This event is being sponsored by CYMK — the Ukrainian Orthodox Youth group of Canada, established in 1931. Their aim since then has been to foster hard-working individuals of the Ukrainian Orthodox community into leaders with a strong base in their faith, culture and ties to their community. All local youth groups have been active members of their parishes, whether donating money for windows, vestments, chandeliers, or orphanages or planning and leading social-events for the parish.

The CYMK and USRL Convention will help you gain enthusiasm, empathy and love from those who live far away and enlighten your spirituality as we pray together.

To register, visit cymk.ca/convention2017 or contact us at contact@cymk.ca

In Christ,
