Everyday Spirituality: Prayer, Work, Rest — Lenten Spiritual Talk by Dr. Daniel Opperwall — Wednesday, March 28th, 7pm

As Orthodox Christians, we all want to build and deepen our connection to God each and every day. But for those of us living in the world, busy lives of work, family, and parish responsibilities can make this feel impossible. In this talk, Dr Daniel Opperwall will explore some of the foundations of Orthodox spiritual life as described by the Church Fathers and consider how the lessons and techniques of these great spiritual masters can help us build a life of faith as modern people in the world.

Daniel G. Opperwall is a husband and father of three young children. He teaches Church history and patristics at the Orthodox School of Theology at Trinity College, University of Toronto. He is the author of two books: one on spirituality entitled A Layman in the Desert, and a children’s book on prayer entitled We Pray.

Copies of his books will be available for purchase after the presentation. Visit him at: www.dgopperwall.com

Dr. Opperwall’s presentation will begin at 7 PM.

There is no charge for the event, but freewill donations will be accepted.

Time and Despondency — Lecture and Book Presentation: Wednesday, Feb. 28th, 7:00pm — St. John the Baptist parish, Oshawa

Idleness. Apathy. Restlessness. Procrastination. These are symptoms of what early Christian theologians called despondency (acedia), a spiritual sickness rooted in a lack of care or effort. A condition as old as the ancients, despondency thrives in today’s culture of leisure, anxiety, and digital distraction.

Time and Despondency is a penetrating synthesis of ancient theology, spiritual memoir, and self-help practicality. It envisions despondency as the extension of a broken relationship with the experience of time. Driven by the fear of death and the anxiety of living, despondency drives us to abandon the present moment, forsaking the only temporal realm in which we have true fellowship with Christ. The remedies offered by time-honoured Christian thinkers for this predicament constitute not only an antidote to despondency but also stepping stones back to the present moment. In regaining the sacredness of time, we re-encounter the Resurrection of Christ in the dark and restless moments of our lives.

Dr. Nicole Roccas has been researching and writing about time from both a historical and theological perspective for nearly ten years. In addition to being an editor at the Writer’s Loom (www.thewritersloom.com), she lectures at the Orthodox School of Theology at Trinity College (Toronto). You can find more of her writing on her Ancient Faith podcast and blog, Time Eternal, and her website (www.nicoleroccas.com). Nicole has a PhD in European History from the University of Cincinnati.

Dr. Roccas’ presentation will begin at 7 PM.

Copies of her book will be available for purchase.

There is no charge for the event, but freewill donations will be accepted.

Dear clergy, parishioners, and parents,

If you consider yourself dedicated to our church, if you feel the future strength of our church rests with our youth, you believe in the power of unity, or you have never attended the convention before, then this is the event for you! If you, as a parishioner or a parent, are looking for ideas and suggestions about how to start, run or improve a youth program, then this convention is for you!

“Why is attendance at the National CYMK Convention beneficial?”

The CYMK-UOY National Executive has worked diligently to put together practical, relevant and engaging sessions that will walk youth and adults through the steps required to start, run, or improve a youth program. The action-packed five-day program consists of youth organizational techniques, financial management skills, promotion and advertising skills, conflict resolution skills, a mini-faith program, and an all-inclusive choir to sing the Divine Liturgy. This event is also an opportunity to form new relationships, share ideas and common interests. Joining efforts at conventions helps on many levels to work towards a greater cause.

This is the opportunity to bring TOGETHER our community, and show our children what it means to be UNITED.

“Who is CYMK-UOY?”

This event is being sponsored by CYMK — the Ukrainian Orthodox Youth group of Canada, established in 1931. Their aim since then has been to foster hard-working individuals of the Ukrainian Orthodox community into leaders with a strong base in their faith, culture and ties to their community. All local youth groups have been active members of their parishes, whether donating money for windows, vestments, chandeliers, or orphanages or planning and leading social-events for the parish.

The CYMK and USRL Convention will help you gain enthusiasm, empathy and love from those who live far away and enlighten your spirituality as we pray together.

To register, visit cymk.ca/convention2017 or contact us at contact@cymk.ca

In Christ,

Liza Zienchuk
